Italy's TROPEA
Tropea in the country’s southern tip shares joys of onion and lovely old buildings

Where: Tropea is on the southern Calabrian coast between Rome and Sicily in the “toe” of Italy’s boot. Trains travel into a small station in Tropea (
www.trenitalia.it for schedules). It’s a 10- to 15-minute walk to the town centre.

Lodging: Lots of choices. Casa Del Sole is a B&B in the town centre with four large double rooms, all with private baths. Prices range from 35 to 50 euros ($73 to $105 ) per person, breakfast included, depending on the season. Book directly at
www.casadelsole.cc or see www.bed-and-breakfast-in-italy.com for pictures, booking information and other suggestions. The Rezidenza Il Barone wins high marks on TripAdvisor. Prices range from 40 to 60 euros. See www.bedebreakfast-residenza-il-barone.it.

Restaurants: Atmospheric restaurants line Tropea’s narrow streets and back alleys. The tiny Osteria Le Volpi e L’Uva on Via Garibaldi combines cosy ambience with good value. Dinner with wine costs roughly 15 euros per person.
