Teach secondary students to manage finances

This is something to really be watching out for. As always said, we should not live beyond our means - however, we can live above our means.

Get that?

I READ with interest the report, “Credit report? What’s that?” (my paper, March 17).

The Nanyang Technological University study done by its final-year students was an eye-opener, as it revealed a growing need to educate young Singaporeans about responsible credit management.

Why wait for students to enter tertiary institutions to give them an education on personal financial management?

Students in secondary schools should be taught this important skill, which includes financial planning, credit and investment management.

This knowledge will give them an appreciation of how they should manage their personal finances responsibly.

It will also provide them with a good foundation in planning their finances for retirement when they start work.
